On the occasion of World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Day, an International Awareness Seminar was organized by the Department of Medicine and Pulmonology under the kind patronage of Vice Chancellor Fatima Jinnah Medical University, Prof. Dr. Khalid Masud Gondal.
Dr. Javed Kayani, Chief In-Charge Accident and Emergency Department, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, graced the event as the chief guest.
The main objective of the seminar is to create awareness about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
In the welcome address, Principal Prof. Noreen Akmal thanked all the esteemed guests and participants for attending the seminar. She said COPD is a potentially preventable and treatable disease. World COPD Day is celebrated on November 15 every year. She said that smoking is the primary cause of the greater risk of COPD in adults over 40 years of age.
Prof. Dr. Khalid Masud Gondal, Vice Chancellor, expressed gratitude to Chief Guest Dr. Javed Kayani for giving up valuable time. He remarked that Dr. Javed Kayani is an inspiration to the nation and that his contributions are worthy of praise. He also prayed for oppressed people of GHAZA. He added that the symptoms of COPD tend to effect slowly and worsen over time. COPD can be prevented mainly by smoking cessation. He congratulated the Department of Medicine and Pulmonology for organizing the excellent seminar.
Dr. Javed Kayani, Chief In-Charge Accident & Emergency Department, University of Birmingham, UK, delivered a detailed lecture on career counseling. He informed the undergraduate and postgraduate students about the opportunities in the United Kingdom. In the context of World COPD Day, Dr. Javed Kayani informed the participants about asthma. He said severe attacks of asthma can be fatal. Asthma is most commonly suffered in smokers and allergy patients, so the disease can be prevented by developing preventive measures. He added that air pollution can also cause various lung diseases, so make sure to avoid smog and avoid going out in the open air until the polluted smoke (smog) season is over. People with respiratory problems should not go out in such weather. He further said that Fatima Jinnah Medical University is the best institution for medical education. He paid tribute to Professor Khalid Masood Gondal for introducing Pakistan’s higher medical education at the international level.
Dr. Tamim Tahir, Senior Registrar, Pulmonology Department, gave a detailed briefing of COPD. He gave recent updates on the new guidelines for COPD. He also discussed the diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment of COPD.
Prof. Aysha Rashid briefed the participants on how to quit smoking.
Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Kamran Khalid Khawaja, Principal Prof Noreen Akmal, Chairperson Department of Medicine / Dean Nursing / Director Quality Enhancement Cell Prof Bilquis Shabbir, Registrar Prof. Muhammad Nadeem, senior faculty members, and a large number of students were also present on the occasion.
At the end of the seminar, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal distributed shields to the chief guest, Dr. Javed Kayani, and other participants and also organized an awareness walk.
