A pre-scientific Hands-on workshop on “Novel Strategies of Diabetes Management” was organized by the Medicine Department, under the supervision of Chairperson Department of Medicine Prof. Dr. Bilquis Shabbir (Chairperson Department of Medicine/Quality Enhancement Cell/ Dean Nursing)Fatima Jinnah Medical University, Lahore In the context of World Diabetes Day.
Vice Chancellor FJMU Prof. Dr. Khalid Masud Gondal graced the occasion as Chief Guest.
The main objective of today’s workshop was to educate the participants on to the assessment, education about prevention, nutrition, lifestyle modification, monitoring and identification of complications in a diabetic patient.
Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Kamran Khalid Khawaja, Principal FJMC Prof. Dr. Noreen Akmal, Registrar Prof. Dr. Muhammed Nadeem, Prof. Dr. M. Naeem Afzal, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Aftab, Prof Amna Euseph, Dr. Bilal Azeem Butt, Dr Fehmeda Khan, Dr Wasif, Dr Tanvir, senior faculty members, postgraduate and undergraduate students, and male and female nurses also attended the workshop.
Prof. Dr. Khalid Masud Gondal, Vice Chancellor FJMU, stated that these kinds of educational initiatives are essential as they have a direct impact on patients. He said that diabetes affects individuals from head to toe and is the most prevalent illness in Pakistan. Obesity, an unhealthy lifestyle, a family history of diabetes, an imbalanced diet, high blood pressure, and a high blood cholesterol level are the primary risk factors. Significant financial strain and psychological distress for the patient’s family are among the repercussions. Raising awareness, taking preventive action, making dietary changes, and including exercise in your daily routine are the simplest ways to cure the condition. Unfortunately, he said, the majority of diabetic patients come in the late stages of the disease.
He further apprised that quackery is also a dilemma for our country. He said, “Saving the life of one person is like saving the life of all humanity.” At the end of his speech, he and the Department of Medicine for arranging this important academic activity.He highly appreciated and thanked Prof. Bilquis Shabbir for the workshop organisation and innovative stations , and congratulated team Medical Unit 1 for this impressive academic activities, indicating a multidisciplinary approach.
Various stations had been arranged for hands-on training of participants, including: anthropometric assessment , nutrional counselling, monitoring of sugar profile, examination for diabetic foot complications, and management of gestational diabetes. Each station was facilitated by senior experts in the field.
Following this, awareness walk on World Diabetes Day was also organized at the end of the seminar, led by VC-FJMU. Mrs Zahida, Special Secretary for Health, Prof Aftab Choudhry, Prof Khalid Cheema and other senior members were present on this occasion.
