Annual Scientific Conference 2024, Preconference Seminar at Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU) in Lahore hosted an awareness seminar on Thalassaemia Prevention on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. Hon’ble Health Minister Punjab for Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education ,Mr. Khawaja Salman Rafique, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, while Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal (Tamgh-e-Imtiaz and Presidential Pride of Performance Award) served as Patron-in-Chief.
Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal welcomed the distinguished guests, emphasizing that prevention is better than cure. He highlighted the crucial role of counseling, awareness, and preventative measures in preventing thalassaemia. The Punjab Thalassaemia Institute offers services to afflicted people in all 36 districts of Punjab.
Mr. Khawaja Salman Rafique stressed the importance of preventive action, urging future couples to get their blood screened for thalassaemia before marriage. He also emphasized empathy and compassion from medical professionals.
Prof. Dr. Shabnam Bashir noted that Pakistan has increased awareness about thalassaemia and can now diagnose it during pregnancy. Fatima Jinnah Medical University is affiliated with the World’s Largest Prevention Program.
The Punjab Government established the Punjab Thalassaemia and Other Genetic Disorder Prevention and Research Institute to provide free facilities for prevention and eradication of thalassaemia and other genetic diseases.
Thalassemic children presented impressive tableaus during the seminar. Prof. Gondal presented honorary shields to notable guests and distributed certificates to PTGD employees for their outstanding performance
