Introduction of the Department

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral sciences at the Fatima Jinnah Medical University is committed to the trilateral mission of providing the highest level of care to patients, conducting innovative research, and educating the future leaders in the field. Psychiatric and behavioral health disorders range from potentially life-threatening disorders, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and severe depression, as well as less debilitating but common conditions, such as anxiety and less severe mood disorders. These conditions take a toll not only on sufferers themselves, but also on families, caregivers, and society as a whole. Prevention, treatment, management, and rehabilitation of these conditions are central to comprehensive health care.
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences has played a significant role not only in the provision of psychiatric services for patients but it also provides training facilities to medical professionals. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, treat and prevent illnesses that interfere with emotional and behavioral health. Psychological services include assessments, psychological evaluation and psychotherapy.
Services provided by department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences include:

  1. Provision of outdoor services:
    ( 6 days a week) Average number of psychiatric patients is 400_500 on weekly basis.
  2. Provision of indoor services:
    Average number of patients is 15 _18 on weekly basis.
  3. Drug and rehabilitation programs:
    Provision of indoor services for detoxification of drug addicts, out patient management of drug and substance abuse and counseling services for motivation and rehabilitation according to Pro
  4. Forensic psychiatry service:
    Medico legal assessment of patients referred to through court or authorities.
  5. Liaison services:
    Provision of liaison services to all various departments likeMedicine,Surgery, Neurosurgery, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Orthopedics and ICU within the hospital and all other hospitals in Punjab
  6. Child psychiatry:
    Outdoor and indoor services for ADHD, Autism, Learning disability, Tics, Anxiety, Conduct disorders, Epilepsy, and all other aspects of Behavioural and Psychiatric issues.
  7. Counseling services:
    Facility of clinical psychologist is available. Internship program for students of psychology from various institutes.
  8. Student Counseling Services.
    Faculty Members and senior Psychologists are available for Medical Students of FJMU and also Students from other institutions, 6 days a week on turn basis.

Educational Programs:
Training of post graduate trainees through lectures, case presentation, case conference and CPC. Rotation of post graduate trainees to various other specialities as per training requirement.
Teaching 3rd Year Medical Students Of M.B.B.S, the subject of Behavioural Sciences, through Lectures in lecture theater and small groups discussion 5 days a week for 2 hours.
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences strive to provide the highest level of clinical care to all patients, create new knowledge and translate these discoveries from literature to bedside, and educate the future generations who will carry on this work.
The Department is involved at all levels in carrying this mission into the larger national community. The Department takes seriously its role as a spokesperson for the profession and in publicizing the importance of behavioral health for the nation’s well-being and stigma reduction. The Chair and Department faculty have played a national role in psychiatric and behavioral health forums (e.g., focusing on depression, schizophrenia, alcohol and drug additions, tobacco use, obesity eating disorders, and patient advocacy, among others). As mission, the Department maintains active, leading programs in each of these areas.
Vision
Growing research on the etiology of psychiatric illness and the increasing number of treatments available to patients is at last beginning to lift the stigma of mental illness and offering hope to those who suffer from it. These developments are increasing the likelihood of expanded funding for clinical care, research, and philanthropy.
