Introduction of the Department

The Department of Community Medicine was initially known as the Department of Hygiene. During the course of time, the name changed several times before eventually being finalized as Community Medicine. Initially, the subject was taught by the Visiting Prof. Samad Shah, with the support of a Demonstrator, Dr. Shireen Zaman. In the years that followed, the department flourished under the insightful and visionary leadership of various Heads, notably Prof. Jamila Rana, Dr. Mahlaqa Rana, Prof. Shaheena Manzoor, Prof. Mehmooda Mubashar, Prof. Nargis Rehana Malik, Dr. Rakhshanda Farid, Prof. Tajamul Mustafa, Dr. Tasneem Kausar, Dr. Sakeena Sadaf and Dr. Zarabia Pervaiz Butt, amongst others. Currently, the Department is headed by Dr. Taskeen Zahra. Her team diligently works to achieve the vision and mission of the department in the era of research and evidence-based practices. The Department of Community Medicine aims to be a leading teaching and training center in the relevant subject through medical education, research and community health services of international standards.

The faculty has a strong ambition and direction to create a stimulating environment for the under- and postgraduate healthcare professionals through self-directed learning, professionalism and community-oriented services. It also aims to enhance the integration and collaboration between clinical and basic sciences through research and to conduct high-impact interdisciplinary research, on a national and international level.

The department got its recognition from College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) under the worthy leadership of Vice Chancellor, Prof. Khalid Masud Gondal. The department functions on philosophical grounds of teaching and research complementarity. The faculty provides systematic research facilitation to undergraduate and postgraduate students, with a research output exceeding 30 undergraduate projects completed each year. 

The Department is also engaged in various national Public Health initiatives and active participation in these projects and peer collaborations bring twofold benefits for the university in terms of faculty development or institutional capital and university’s recognition in the field. In line with this spirit, the staff regularly attends training sessions organized by various agencies.

In Department runs outreach programs for selected communities. Under the ambit of this program, students are taken to various places of public health importance including a School, a Rehabilitation Center, Factory for Occupational Health, EPI Centre and Primary Healthcare settings including Basic Health Unit & Rural Health Centre and AFJOG. The Department plays a pivotal role to promote healthcare via prevention & awareness and to develop sustainable environment through health and academic activities in steps towards healthy nation.
