The Department of Paediatrics, FJMU/ SGRH is known as Rao Bahadur Narain Das Mool th Chand Hospital for Children. It was founded by Lady Glancy on 5 April, 1944, and was st formally inaugurated by Sir Evan Jenkins (Governor of the Punjab) on 21 December, 1946. After partition, Prof. Hajira Abdullah was appointed the first Head of Department. Currently, the department is being headed by Prof. Naveed Akbar Hoana, who is also the Dean Faculty of Public Health & Preventive Medicine. There are three Assistant Professors, four Senior Registrars, one Principal Medical Officer, one Senior Medical Officer and one Woman Medical Officer working in the department. In addition there are twenty FCPS trainees, fifteen MD postgraduate residents and twenty one House Officers in the department. It is a 130 bedded department, comprising of Paediatric Emergency (13 beds), Paediatrics ICU (12 beds), Neonatal Unit (60 beds), Paediatric Ward/ Isolation/ High Dependancy Unit (39 beds ) and Preventive Paediatrics (6 beds). There is an active Outpatient Department (OPD) as well with a high patient turn over. Furthermore Ultrasonography, Laboratory and X-ray facility are available under one roof, for facilitation of the patients. The department has an extraordinary teaching activity, involving teachers from other institutions as well. Moreover, the department conducts training courses in collaboration with UNICEF for Lady Health Visitors (LHV) and nurses. Other training courses like Neonatal Resuscitation, Breast Feeding & Clinical Preparation Course for Postgraduates are also arranged on regular basis.
