BALAK RAM MEDICAL COLLEGE

The history of Balak Ram Medical College dates back to 1941 when the Punjab Medical Education and Relief society was formed with 100 founder members. The aim was to establish a medical college for Hindus only. Mrs. Balak Ram , daughter in law of late Sir Ganga Ram and her son L. Sri Ram, along with other members of the society purchased a bungalow, occupied by late Lala Har Kishan Lal at Queen’s road to house a medical college. It was named after a son of Sir Ganga Ram, as Balak Ram Medical College.Balak Ram Medical College started functioning in 1942, with a batch of 50 students, comprising of 44 male students and 6 female students, who were granted admission strictly on basis of merit (marks obtained in ISC examination of the Punjab University).Col. D H Rai was an eminent pioneer who worked diligently for the college and became the first Principal of Balak Ram Medical College. The initial faculty included; Col Bharucha as Professor of Anatomy/Surgery, Col. Amir Chand as Professor of Medicine and Dr. Chowdhary as Professor of Physiology.
Balak Ram Medical College was affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine of University of the Punjab. Anatomy and Physiology blocks of Balak Ram Medical College were opened by Shirimati Sarojni Naidu, on Sunday, the 6æ of January 1946. The Anatomy Hall named after R. B. Dr. Beli Ram, was donated by his son L. Lahori Mal Khosla.At the time of partition of the Subcontinent, Balak Ram Medical College was left abandoned. The medical education and training was discontinued, as there was no faculty nor any student. The premises was closed, for all activities.

FATIMA JINNAH MEDICAL UNIVERSITY LAHORE

Fatima Jinnah Medical College (FJMC) was awarded the status of Medical University on 1st July 2015, by the Government of Punjab. The transition from a medical college to medical university has been a landmark event in the history of the institute. This juncture not only added to institutional endurance but also paved way for a larger scope to orchestrate an impactful role in Pakistan’s healthcare spectrum. Cognizant of FJMU’s inspirational history spanning over seven decades and its foundational values, the rank and file braced the status of university as a divine opportunity to serve at a bigger platform with more meaningful contributions.Professor Khalid Masud Gondal Tamga e Imtiaz is the current Vice Chancellor of Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU). Today, FJMU is the parent institution to multiple hospitals & colleges. Sir Ganga Ram Hospital with 954 beds capacity, Government Teaching Hospital Shahdara with 200 beds capacity and Government Teaching Hospital, Mozang with 50 beds capacity, fall under the institutional ambit of FJMU. In addition to FJMC as a Constituent College , the College of Nursing SGRH , College of Nursing, Shahdara and a Paramedical School GTHS for Allied Health Sciences , have also been affiliated with the University.The synergistic execution of multidimensional tertiary care delivery at the university’s hospitals and high quality academic programs delivery at the constituent colleges has augmented the outreach and diapason of excellence the university has to offer. The untiring efforts and commitment of the university leadership, faculty and staff have led to requisite HEC accreditations and regular NOC on 23rd December, 2017. The affiliated teaching hospitals have also been accredited by Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) and CPSP. With fully functional Examination Department, Registrar Office, Quality Enhancement Cell and Offices of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) in place, the university has an elaborate functional delineation in place to ensure a streamlined execution of its strategic plans.Building on the prestige earned by FJMC over years, through a prolific number of brilliant graduates excelling in their illustrious careers across the globe, FJMU has expanded its multifaceted portfolio of programs to offer at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. TheUniversity is offering post graduate Programs in nineteen different disciplines. Presently, four hundred and thirty residents are enrolled in CPSP and MD/MS University programs in various specialties. Recently M. Phil Programmes in ten specialties have been approved by the Syndicate, FJMU. New post graduate and Ph.D Programs are in the pipeline and are expected to be launched soon.The future trajectory is being built on consolidating the established role of any forward-looking University: acting as a respectable repository and generator of knowledge, and societal impact through the interwoven healthcare facilities under FJMU’s umbrella. The University’s leadership, Faculty, students and staff are all committed to excellence as a habit. The goal is singular: to elevate FJMU’s status not only as a premier medical education institution in Pakistan but also with a repute transcending national boundaries commensurate with the inspirational stories of its past and accomplishments of its globally acknowledged high achievers.
